Trump Announces Possible Meeting Between Putin and Zelensky: 'Progress in Negotiations'. Russian Oil Also on the Table

Donald Trump speaks again about a possible diplomatic breakthrough in the war between Russia and Ukraine. The President of the United States announced that a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky could be organized soon, claiming that contacts with Moscow and Kyiv are producing encouraging results. A date or location for the potential summit has not yet been communicated, but the White House seems intent on accelerating the negotiation process.

"We are making a lot of progress with Russia and Ukraine," Trump told reporters, adding that he believes a direct meeting between the two presidents is possible in the near future. His words rekindle expectations for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, although the conditions under which the parties would be willing to sit at the same table remain unclear.

Alongside military and territorial issues, significant economic interests are reportedly emerging in the contacts between Washington and Moscow. According to the Financial Times, among the discussed hypotheses is the return of American companies to the Russian oil sector, through the possible reactivation of joint industrial projects.

One opportunity could involve exploiting energy resources off the coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East, where American and Russian companies had previously developed collaborations in the hydrocarbons sector.

The potential resumption of these activities could represent an economic incentive in the negotiations, but no definitive agreements have been reached. It also remains unclear how such initiatives could align with the Western sanctions imposed on Moscow following the invasion of Ukraine.

While diplomatic contacts continue, there is no cessation of military operations on the ground. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it intercepted and shot down 531 Ukrainian drones overnight, reporting incursions in various regions of the country, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Rostov, and the capital area.

The report released by Moscow has not been independently verified. Russian Telegram channels reported attacks in the Moscow region, while Ukrainian monitoring sources reported explosions and fires in the city of Lipetsk, also near the large Novolipetsk metallurgical plant.

The reports confirm the climate of high military tension accompanying attempts to reopen political dialogue between the parties.
