The exhibition 'Just EUman – How a European Citizen is Born' has become a political battleground at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The initiative, focusing on human development from conception to birth, is under fire from opposition members for its anti-abortion stance.
Located in the Emilio Colombo Space of the Weiss building and open until September 17, the exhibition is spearheaded by Italian MEP Paolo Inselvini of the ECR group, in collaboration with Pro Vita & Famiglia.
The exhibit features fourteen panels and a video titled 'Baby Oliver.' The organizers aim to showcase the various stages of human development from conception to birth.
The opening ceremony was attended by Inselvini, ECR group leader Nicola Procaccini, Fratelli d'Italia delegation head Carlo Fidanza, Pro Vita & Famiglia president Antonio Brandi, and spokesperson Maria Rachele Ruiu.
However, the initiative has sparked immediate political backlash. Manon Aubry, co-president of The Left group, criticized its presence in the European Parliament, calling for its removal as she believes it contradicts women's rights recognized at the European level.
The Democratic Party also voiced objections. MEP Alessandra Moretti labeled the exhibit as an 'insult,' criticizing both its content and the decision to host it within the Parliament's premises.
Moretti linked the controversy to the memory of Emma Bonino, highlighting how the Parliament had recently honored her efforts on reproductive health issues. She argued that hosting an anti-abortion event immediately afterward disrespects Bonino's legacy and the achievements in women's civil rights.
The Five Star Movement also expressed disapproval. MEP Carolina Morace described it as an 'affront to all women' and claimed it contradicts European Union values.
Morace urged European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to initiate an internal investigation into how the exhibition was authorized. She particularly pointed out the involvement of Polish quaestor Kosma Złotowski, noting his affiliation with the same European parliamentary group as Fratelli d'Italia.
