Before the match kicked off, the Irish players and their coach took to the field wearing black armbands to honor the victims of the Middle East conflict, particularly those in Gaza. During the Israeli national anthem, the Irish team stood with their heads bowed.
Tensions were evident even before the match began. When the team captains were supposed to exchange greetings, Dara O'Shea refrained from shaking hands with Manor Solomon, the Israeli captain and West Ham player, who previously played for Fiorentina. This gesture was mirrored by the other players and both coaches, who also did not exchange greetings.
The celebration of Ireland's third goal carried a special message. After scoring, Jack Moylan removed his black armband, kissed it, and symbolically dedicated the goal to the victims in Gaza.
The match followed days of controversy. Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu opted out of playing, and coach Heimir Hallgrimsson openly opposed the match. In a press conference, he stated, "We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel, not with Israel."
Protests also occurred in Ireland. In the days leading up to the match, some individuals gathered outside the national team's hotel, urging them not to play. Additionally, over 160 Irish athletes signed a letter to the federation, requesting them to forgo the match, arguing that doing so would be a significant gesture of sportsmanship.
Hallgrimsson's comments elicited a strong response from the Israeli Football Association. In a message posted on X, the association highlighted Israel's contributions to science and culture, including its Nobel Prize achievements. The same message harshly criticized the Irish coach, labeling him as hypocritical, ignorant, and foolish. The Israeli association further explained that their team would play to confront and defeat those who, in their view, support such attitudes.
