Ukraine, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko Resigns: Zelensky Plans New Government

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the imminent departure of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, paving the way for a new cabinet reshuffle. The Prime Minister's resignation, which must be formally approved by Parliament in the coming days, will automatically lead to the dissolution of the entire government.

In announcing the decision, Zelensky did not provide detailed reasons, merely stating that the country needs a new political and administrative phase to tackle the challenges of the coming months. Priorities include strengthening foreign policy and better preparing for the consequences of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, which regularly strain Ukraine's power system during the winter season.

Svyrydenko, 40, took over the government in July 2025 after serving as Minister of Economy. Her appointment came as part of the most extensive government renewal since the start of the Russian invasion, but her term will end after less than a year.

The name of the future Prime Minister has not yet been officially announced. According to sources close to the presidential majority, leading candidates include former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who led the government from 2020 to 2025, and Sergii Koretskyi, current head of the state energy company Naftogaz, who has so far been uninvolved in active politics.

The President also announced that he has offered Svyrydenko a new significant role in relations with one of Ukraine's main allies. Although no further details were provided, several sources speculate on a future diplomatic post in the United States.

In recent months, Svyrydenko was considered close to Andriy Yermak, former head of the presidential office and a prominent figure in Zelensky's entourage, whose position has been significantly weakened following a scandal involving alleged corruption incidents.
