A first half to remember for Intesa Sanpaolo, which posted outstanding results and reaffirmed its position as a major player in the European banking landscape. CEO Carlo Messina commented enthusiastically on the figures for the first six months of the year, calling it “the best half-year ever” for the bank.

Net profit reached €5.2 billion, with revenues, fees, and insurance operations all hitting record highs. These results pave the way for a year-end net profit forecast “well above €9 billion,” driven — Messina explained — by the bank’s strong organic growth potential.

Return on equity (ROE) stood at 20%, confirming the strength of Intesa Sanpaolo’s business model. “We are among the few European banks capable of combining high profitability with a meaningful commitment to reducing inequality,” the CEO stated. Accordingly, the bank announced it will return at least €8.2 billion to shareholders in 2025, 35% of which — equal to €3.7 billion — will go to Italian households and shareholder foundations.

On the real economy front, the group disbursed €29.2 billion to Italian households and businesses in the first half of 2025, marking a 44% year-on-year increase. At group level, total lending amounted to €41.7 billion.

“The strength of our results, the sustainability of our growth, solid capital base, and low-risk profile enable us to play a unique role in supporting both the real and social economy,” Messina emphasized. At the heart of this strategy is customer focus: “Our clients are at the center of our development plans, and their trust — together with the relationship they have with our credit and advisory professionals — is a key driver of our growth.”

Lastly, Messina extended a special thanks to the people working at Intesa Sanpaolo, calling them “a crucial element in generating solid and sustainable results.”
