Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has proposed Judit Polgár, considered the greatest chess player of all time, as the next president of Hungary. According to the head of government, the country needs a president "of whom every Hungarian can be proud," international media, including the Belgian agency, report.
Magyar announced on Facebook that he will meet Polgár on July 20 to check her availability to take on the role until the adoption of a new Hungarian Constitution. Currently, the 49-year-old chess player has not yet responded to the proposal.
The move follows the resignation of President Tamas Sulyok, who last Friday signed a constitutional amendment ending his term. Judit Polgár, who made history as the youngest Grandmaster at 15, led the women's world ranking for 26 consecutive years and represents a symbol of international sporting excellence.
The Parliament, dominated by the Tisza party with a two-thirds majority, is expected to elect the new president before the national holiday on August 20, making the transition to head of state official.
