An unfortunate incident occurred in southern Sudan where a gold mine collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 60 miners. This information was provided by two survivors who also mentioned that many others are still missing. The number of casualties buried under the rubble could be significantly higher.
Near the town of El-Nahud in Western Kordofan, the tunnels of the Al-Zaraa mine began to give way on Tuesday, and by the following morning, 60 bodies had been recovered.
Following a rescue operation, one survivor, Khair al-Sayyed Jabara, stated, "We don't know how many more are still inside." "Everyone is working tirelessly to retrieve bodies or find survivors, but it's challenging. We need heavy machinery to remove the rocks and soil," they reported from Sudan.
The rescue efforts are further complicated by the mine's structure. "Here, the shafts are all close together. If one collapses, the surrounding ones also fall," explained Al-Amin Suleiman, who was working at the Al-Zaraa mine on Tuesday. "That's exactly what happened yesterday," he added, concluding, "there are still people trapped under the debris since yesterday. I don't think they survived."
The situation in Sudan is extremely unstable: since the outbreak of war in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), both sides have largely funded their military efforts through the gold industry, as well as foreign supporters. Many unemployed individuals have risked their lives in a dangerous gold rush.
